『Karl Lagerfeld’s Words』

Introducing “Karl Lagerfeld’s Words” (Published by Kawade Shobo Shinsha)

This book is a collection of witty and intellectual quotes from Karl Lagerfeld, who led the fashion world for over 60 years and was famously known as the “Emperor of Fashion.”

As I read through it, I couldn’t help but feel that, despite his legendary status, he came across as a bit of a grumpy, philosopher-like figure—difficult, yet endearing, almost like a beloved and amusing grandfather.

Falling in Love with Karl Lagerfeld’s CHANEL

My fascination with CHANEL began precisely because Karl Lagerfeld was its creative director.

I once saw a documentary where, on the eve of a collection’s presentation, Lagerfeld would say, “Fix this, change that,” prompting the waiting atelier seamstresses to redo entire dresses.

Despite the repeated revisions and the all-nighters, one seamstress, with a half-laugh and a weary face, muttered, “I just want to throw this dress out the window right now!”

The garments were likely nearly finished, and the look on her face spoke volumes about how long it would take (hours at least) to unpick the seams and raise the hem by just a few centimeters.

Still, even with such frustrations, they responded to every one of Lagerfeld’s demands with pride and professionalism, saying, “I love this work. I take pride in it.”

Witnessing his refusal to compromise on even the last few centimeters of a hem made me realize: this is what they call craftsmanship. Since then, I’ve looked forward with excitement to each new CHANEL collection, wondering what he would create next.

In the early morning, after working tirelessly through the night, I watched those seamstresses joyfully play around—trying on the clothes and shoes before the show started, giggling, walking the runway for fun. It was charming and unforgettable.

Designs Ahead of Their Time

Lagerfeld led CHANEL as Creative Director from 1983, continuously reinterpreting the style established by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel with a modern perspective.

His designs seamlessly fused tradition and innovation, always pushing the boundaries of what was current and contemporary.

Karl Lagerfeld’s Words

Lagerfeld’s quotes reflect his distinctive aesthetic and philosophical worldview.

For example, “Fashion is not about the past. It’s about the present moment,” shows his relentless focus on modernity. Another quote, “Mode is a matter of attitude and spirit,” offers a deeper insight that goes beyond clothing—it reveals his thoughtful view of fashion as a way of being.

Reading this book reveals the essence of his thought process and creative energy. It becomes clear why his designs captivated so many people for so long.

As someone who loves CHANEL, his words deepened my passion for fashion.

The phrase “I want to be a chic hanger” from a previous blog post of mine also comes from this book.

“Karl Lagerfeld’s Words” is a must-read not only for fashion enthusiasts but for anyone interested in his way of life and philosophy.

I encourage you to pick up a copy and immerse yourself in Karl Lagerfeld’s unique worldview.

My Favorites: “Karl on Books” and “Elisabeth on Karl”

I especially enjoyed the chapters Karl on Books and Elisabeth on Karl. His mother’s bluntly nihilistic remarks clearly left a strong impression on him—you can sense it in every quote.

She reminded me of a strong, no-nonsense mother figure. I loved that.

One memorable episode:
When Karl’s mother Elisabeth tried to make him play the piano, he began performing—only for her to slam the piano lid shut and say,

Draw something instead!
At least that doesn’t get on my nerves as much.
